When teachers and learners use the term ‘future tenses,’ they are simply describing the different ways in which the future can be expressed. There is no ‘future tense,’ instead there are just many different ways that we can talk about future events.
Some of the ways that we can express the future are by using:
- Going to
- Will
- The future perfect
- The present simple
- The present continuous
These are probably the five main ways, but we can also just use regular and modal verbs, for example:
- I have to work tomorrow.
- I can’t go the cinema on Friday.
When most students think about the future they think about ‘will.’ Most people see ‘will’ as the future tense, but it is only one way in which we can talk about the future. In fact, in most cases ‘going to’ should be used instead of ‘will.’ This is because ‘going to’ is used to describe plans or intentions for the future, so when you are talking about the coming weekend or what you are going to do next week, it is most likely that situation calls for ‘going to.’
