A Career That Helps the Environment

After being laid off from my job as a project manager for a marketing firm, I was ready for something else. I’d never given green jobs a serious thought but after doing some volunteer work in my neighborhood, I decided that this may be the change I need for the long-term of my career.

My block club had joined forces with the local non-profit to clean some of the foreclosed homes in the area so that it would be free of abandoned items that may contain mercury and other hazardous chemicals.

While some of the neighbors wondered how a person could leave their home in this condition, my focus was how to gather the debris and create a system that would allow us to finish the job as quickly as possible. Though I was not being paid for this, I found myself enjoying it more than my six-figure salary job.

A lot of my neighbors are at home during the day and they are the internet. Many have found online employment or they may be using it to look for work. For the past couple of years, I have noticed more traffic spikes meaning that it can take a while for my article to be submitted. Then I looked into green hosting as I kept getting upgrade packages from my former host but there was never a difference in service.

So I tried it with a little reluctance but since my best friend was the one to enlighten me about carbon footprints and how all of these connections were polluting the air, I was sold.

And since I’ve had this new host, there have been few problems. In fact, the one time I called technical support, they answered my question so quickly that I didn’t even have time to multi-task like I always do.

You will be surprised to know that hiring managers are nervous about asking job interview questions. They may not be as nervous as you are, but they are nervous because they do not like uncomfortable situations. And no one, unless they are narcissists, like to be in a position to not hire someone. Decision makers understand that the people who do not get hired have to go back out into the market place try for another job.

And because hiring managers do not give feedback, and never really learn what they did wrong on the interview. Not knowing does cost candidates other job opportunities. But the reality is that if a hiring manager tells a candidate what they did wrong that opens up a whole can of worms. Most job seekers will not take the feedback as constructive so it is best for the hiring manager not to say anything at all.

I like to think that I’m one of those folks that could be described as a “people person”. I’m fantastic in a face to face interview. However, there’s one big problem there. Interview skills are only really good when you’re able to get yourself into the interview seat in the first place. And to do that you need a good resume, and great resume letters. The letter part is something I find especially difficult. It’s just so hard to talk to people when you can’t actually see their body language or gauge their emotions. Thankfully, I found a company full of people who don’t feel that poses any problem at all. They’re basically able to offer up a service where they’ll take care of all those details for you. They can write up the letters, and tweak your resume. They’re able to handle all those little details which lead up to one getting an interview.

When my friends asked me how to lose weight, I told them to get themselves some dental assistant jobs! Confused, I told them I was serious. I had been overweight when I graduated from college.
